The Spirit of the
Liturgy. By Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
Considered by
Ratzinger devotees as his greatest work on the Liturgy, this profound and
beautifully written treatment of the great prayer of the Church
will help readers rediscover the Liturgy in all its hidden spiritual wealth and
transcendent grandeur as the very center of our Christian life.
|
In his own foreword to the book, Cardinal Ratzinger
compares this work to a much earlier classic of the same title by Romano
Guardini because Ratzinger feels that his insights here are similar with what
Guardini achieved in his time regarding a renewed understanding of the Liturgy.
My purpose here is to assist this renewal of understanding of the
Liturgy. Its basic intentions coincide with what Guardini wanted to achieve.
The only difference is that I have had to translate what Guardini did at the
end of the First World War, in a totally different historical situation, into
the context of our present-day questions, hopes and dangers. Like Guardini, I
am not attempting to involve myself with scholarly discussion and research. I
am simply offering an aid to the understanding of the faith and to the right
way to give the faith its central form of expression in the Liturgy.

Father Adrian Fortescue's Ceremonies of the Roman
Rite Described was the standard ceremonial manual for almost 50 years from
1917. Revised several times by Canon J.B. O'Connell after Fortescue's early
death in 1923, the last edition was published in 1962. The Saint Austin Press
has republished this edition to meet the growing demand for this authoritative
guide to the celebration of the traditional Roman rite.
Every
liturgical eventuality is covered by this exhaustive text book: how to treat a
king when he is present at the Mass, how to incense the candle at the Easter
vigil, plus all the minutiae of a traditional Pontifical High Mass.
Fortescues diagrams of the sanctuary with the sacred ministers
represented by appropriate symbols are a unique and extremely helpful feature.
"Those participating in the worldwide growth in the celebration of
the traditional Roman rite will welcome this book and find in it the support
they need in striving to be faithful to the traditional liturgy." Michael
Davies, president, Una Voce International Federation. |

Filled with the holy and reverential grandeur of the
Churchs Latin Mass, the Liber Usualis was in bygone days a standard and
all-inclusive guidebook to Gregorian Chant for the whole of the liturgical
year. In fact, this 2,000-page treasury of chant was published in order to
restore the original splendor of the Churchs chant. Now you can use it to
teach yourself and others the words and music of these magnificent chants - and
to recapture the sense of the sacred that this music once made a part of every
Catholics worship experience.
The Liber Usualis With Introduction
and Rubrics in English Edited by the Benedictines of Solesmes Originally
published in 1952; keyed to the Churchs old liturgical calendar 2,045 pgs

James Hitchcock gives an extraordinarily incisive
analysis of the liturgical abuse and destructive liturgical reforms brought
about by professional liturgists and other "experts" over the last thirty
years. Hitchcock chronicles the havoc wreaked by modern liturgists who
abandoned the noble purposes of the classical (pre-1965) Liturgical Movement
whose aim was to deepen people's appreciation of the inexhaustible mystery of
the liturgy by elevating the practice of the liturgy to incorporate neglected
riches of earlier centuries, especially the patristic Age. Instead liturgists
have sought "relevance" by means of continued adaptation to contemporary
culture.
Hitchcock reveals how the tendency toward a desacralized
liturgy has had the most profound effects on the whole life of the Church, as
well as society. One's basic approach to liturgy is likely to be both a
reflection and a catalyst to a whole range of values and beliefs. As Hitchcock
states, "It is impossible to change basic symbols and rituals without also
changing the life of the society whose symbols and rituals they are."
"With typical clarity, Hitchcock indicts recent theological and
liturgical attempts to suburbanize the Heavenly City. What was prophecy when it
was first published, now is sober reflection. There is hope here for surviving
the most tragic self-mutilation of Catholic culture since the Arian crisis of
the fourth century." -Fr. George Rutler, Author, Beyond Modernity
"Hitchcock systematically distills profoundly perspicacious principles
from the data and offers sturdy constructive remedies. His grasp of the West
since the 1960's is exhaustive and brilliant." -Thomas Howard
